About Asano Gama and Mayuko Ichino
Asano Gama is one of the kilns that Maison Toji has carried since its opening. Mayuko Ichino, who presides over it, was born in Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture (now Tamba Sasayama City) in 1993. After graduating from Okayama Prefectural University's Ceramic Design course in 2016, she returned to her hometown of Tamba Sasayama and learned pottery at her family's kiln, "Shozan Gama." She became independent in 2024 and established "Asano Gama."
Tanba ware is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan with a history of over 800 years, and there are approximately 60 kilns in the production area (according to the Tanba Tachikui Ceramic Ware Cooperative Association). Among them, Asano Gama's characteristic style is a youthful expression that adds lovely patterns of dots and flowers to the rustic Tanba clay.
Her signature "Dot Series" can be viewed from this kiln-specific collection page. A special feature article on Asano Gama's craftsmanship will also be published soon in our Journal.
