Tambaware is said to have originated from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period, and is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (certified as a Japan Heritage site). Shusaku Ichino of Shozo Kiln (Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture) is an artist who, after graduating from Ryukoku University, honed his skills at Kyoto Prefectural Advanced Skills School for Ceramic Arts and continues to create pottery as the third generation. While valuing traditional techniques, he produces modern works with rich colors and delicate flows, and has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramics Competition.
