Tambaware is said to have originated from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period, and is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan (certified as a Japan Heritage site). Shusaku Ichino of Shozo Kiln (Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture) is a potter who, after graduating from Ryukoku University, honed his skills at the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery and Ceramics Advanced Technical School, and continues to create as the third generation. While valuing traditional techniques, he creates modern works with rich colors and delicate flows, and has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramic Competition.
