The rhythm of "shinogi" created by carved lines.

Tamba ware is pottery that has been passed down mainly in Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. Tetsuji Ichino of Ichino Satoru Kiln uses his unique "colored line inlay (saishiki-sen-zogan)" technique, where he carves patterns freehand and then embeds colored clay, to create geometric and smooth lines. He has received numerous accolades, including acceptance into the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition and the Hyogo Prefecture Art Encouragement Prize.

01. Vertical "shinogi" shadows

The "shinogi" technique of carving the surface of the vessel creates a regular rhythm of vertical lines. The shadows change depending on how the light hits them, creating an expression unique to handmade items within their simplicity.

02. White and black, contrasting presences

In white, glaze collects in the carved lines, creating soft shadows. The black has a matte texture that emphasizes the convexities and concavities of the shinogi, resulting in a dignified appearance.

03. Handleless, sleek free cup

This handleless free cup can be used for coffee, tea, wine, cold sake, and more. Its size fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, making it a versatile item for daily dining.
