Tambayaki, believed to have originated in the late Heian period to early Kamakura period, is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (certified as a Japan Heritage site). Shusaku Ichino of Shozogama (Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture) is an artisan who, after graduating from Ryukoku University, honed his skills at the Kyoto Prefectural Technical College for Pottery and continues to create as the third generation. While valuing traditional techniques, he produces contemporary works with rich colors and delicate flows.
