Tamba ware is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan (certified as a Japan Heritage site), said to have originated from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period. Shusaku Ichino, from Shozo Kiln (Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture), is an artist who, after graduating from Ryukoku University and honing his skills at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Training School, continues to create pottery as the third-generation successor. While cherishing traditional techniques, he produces contemporary works with rich colors and delicate flows, and has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramics Competition.
The lapis lazuli glaze sinks from deep indigo to jet black. The color deepens towards the center, creating a sense of depth as if peering into the deep sea. Its expression changes with the light, making it a striking piece on any dining table.
Its palm-sized dimension makes it easy for daily use as a condiment plate, bean dish, or individual serving plate. The deep blue color complements both Japanese and Western cuisine beautifully.
Due to manual glazing, there are individual differences in the shades of lapis lazuli glaze and the patterns in the center. Color unevenness and glaze pooling are not defects, but rather the natural texture intended by the artist. Please enjoy the unique character of each piece.
