Tamba ware is considered to have originated between the late Heian period and early Kamakura period, and is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (recognized as a Japan Heritage site). Shusaku Ichino of Shozogama in Tamba-Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, is a ceramic artist who, after graduating from Ryukoku University and honing his skills at the Kyoto Prefectural Advanced Technical Training School for Pottery, continues to create works as the third-generation potter. While cherishing traditional techniques, he creates contemporary pieces with rich colors and delicate flowing patterns, and has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Kobe Biennale Contemporary Ceramics Competition.
