Tamba ware is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan (certified as a Japan Heritage site), believed to have originated from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period. Tetsuji Ichino of Ichino Satoru Kiln (Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture) uses his unique technique called "colored line inlay" (saishoku sen-zogan), where he freehand carves patterns and embeds colored clay, to express geometric and smooth lines. He has received numerous accolades, including selection for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Hyogo Prefectural Art Encouragement Award.
This mug has a sleek silhouette with a straight rim. The vertically flowing line inlay pattern adds the warmth of handcrafted work to its simple design.
The flat rim provides a pleasant feel to the mouth, and its size is perfect for everyday use, whether for coffee or tea.
Since each inlay is applied freehand, there are individual differences in the spacing of the lines and the color output. This means that even within the same product, each piece has a unique expression to enjoy.
